How well you prepare your boat for travel is going to determine the condition it will be in when it arrives at its destination. Securing everything will protect your boat during the transportation process, and identifying any preexisting damage will save you from having to answer to complaints on the other end when the boat arrives.
As service providers will not be held responsible for damages incurred from improper travel and loading preparations, it is important that you prepare the boat yourself, or have a qualified boat yard do so. It is also advised that you have it inspected by a licensed marine surveyor. You need to have your boat prepped for pick-up before the transporter arrives. Give yourself plenty of time for this, it may take more than a day. If possible, be prepped early just in case the transport company needs to come a day early for weather or any other reasons.
Pick a marina or boatyard as a loading spot that has a 14' clearance, so that branches and wires will not interfere with your boat at the beginning of its trip. If you or your agent have not already chosen a marina or boatyard for your drop-off point, you can ask your service provider if they can refer you to one in the destination area. Again, make sure it has a 14' clearance.
Before dismantling anything on your boat, take photos so that you have something to reference when reassembling the boat after the transport. Then, you can remove all personal items from your boat. Clean and inspect your boat's exterior for any damages. Make a list of any problems found and take photos and date these if possible. The driver you hire will run another assessment with you for your Condition Report, but its good to have an idea of what to point out to him when he arrives.
  • Secure all loose gear above and below deck.
  • Close and secure any hatches by tying or taping them. If they leak, seal them to avoid any possible water damage.
  • Cabin windows also need to be latched and taped from the outside.
  • Drain all fuel and water tanks (some companies say to drain until 1/4 full, others want them completely empty), and remove any drain plugs from the hull.
  • To avoid damage during the winter months, all water systems, pumps, and air conditioners, etc. should be drained of any water.
  • Disconnect batteries, and secure the cables away from it to prevent any contact.
Any external accessories and anything protruding past the hull must be removed, securely padded, packed and stored below.
  • Remove any valuable electronics and anchors from the deck, pad and secure what you can in the cabin. The same goes for any windshield or Plexiglas that protrudes over the flying bridge.
  • In the case of something large, such as a dinghy or any superstructure, secure it on board and make sure it is well-padded.
  • If your boat has a radar arch or fly-bridge which causes it to load out higher than 13 Feet 6 Inches, they will need to be removed, padded and secured to the boat.
  • Damage or loss of these external items do not fall under the service provider's responsibility. Once everything is secured below, lock the cabin and keep the key during travel.
Remove any boat covers. Shrink wrap is not always advised, because it easily rips during travel and can cause damage to your boat. If you do choose to have your boat shrink wrapped, transporters will attempt to fix any tears during travel, however they cannot be held responsible for any damage caused by shrink wrap, or any other coverings.

To avoid having a wooden boat dry out during transport, coat it with linseed oil.

Remember, your boat will be experiencing stronger winds than it is used to, so expect it to arrive with normal travel wear and dirt from the roads.

How to Calculate International Boat Shipping Costs

When it comes to shipping a boat overseas from the USA, there are several factors to consider in order to obtain an accurate cost measurement. Also, besides these factors (like the boat’s overall size and weight) one needs to consider the most important one, which is the actual shipping method itself.
The two most popular international boat shipping methods available are shipping by container and the roll-on roll-off shipping method.
  • Container shipping method: Shipping by container is the most known international boat shipping method. It was been used for along time already and many consider it to be the best way to ship a boat internationally when the shipping distance is very long. This method can prove to be the most economical because when shipping a boat by container, you pay a fixed price for the whole container.
But the containers have limited dimensions and your boat may be too big to fit inside the container. Sometime the boat has to be loaded on its side which runs a slight risk of taking some unexpected damage.
  • Roll-on roll-off shipping method: The roll-on roll-off boat shipping method is considered to be far more efficient that the container method. In it, boats are placed on trailers which then are literally rolled on board the cargo ship, and then rolled out of it once it reaches its port of destination. Shipping costs for this method are calculated by considering the entire volume of the boat, measuring its entire length, width and height in order to determine the total volume to be shipped.
Considering that the total shipping cost for this method will be based on the volume of the boat, many owners simply remove some parts of their boats in order to reduce its shipping costs, which makes this shipping method very efficient.
Considering all these, in the end it all comes down to the specific needs of the customer in order for him/her to decide the best shipping method for his/her boat. Just don’t forget that the most important factors are entire volume, shipping distance and delivery speed

Give one of our associates a call they will assist you in determing the best solution for your boat shipping needs.

Yachts valued at more than $1 billion will be displayed along Miami Beach’s Collins Avenue

A growing venue MIAMI BOAT SHOW AND SIMPLY SAIL

The show has expanded again, spreading north on Collins Avenue another 400 feet to add another 30 yachts from 52 to 134 feet.   The show expanded a bit geographically and added the Miami Beach Marina for very large yachts.  The Miami Beach Marina will host eight superyachts over 50 meters (164 feet) with brokerage firms that include Worth Avenue Yachts, Camper & Nicholsons, HMY, Northrop & Johnson, Merle Wood & Associates, Fraser Yachts and Burgess Yachts.

Sea Ray will display yachts between 42 and 65 feet. Tiara is also bringing its fleet to the show, with eight yachts from 36 to 60 feet.  VanDutch Marine Ltd., which is now being built by Marquis Yachts, is another new addition, bringing three boats from 31 to 54 feet.

It will host at least 70 yachts over 100 feet, and that number was still growing in early January. (As a comparison, the Monaco Yacht Show has 90 yachts over 100 feet.) At the time, the largest boats in the show were a 164-foot Christensen and a 143-foot Benetti. Other yachts include a 123-foot Sanlorenzo, a 111-foot Sunseeker and a 110-foot Mangusta. “The lineup of boats is phenomenal,”.

Ferretti’s new-boat display will include 22 or 23 boats — two less than last year — but only because there are some bigger boats in the mix, Henderson says. There will be two Custom Line boats, a Custom Line 100 and a Navetta 26. The company will debut the Ferretti 750 among its lineup of six other Ferrettis, six Rivas and three Bertrams in “a prime location.”

Four Marquis yachts will be at the builder’s in-water display on Collins Avenue. They are the 420 Sport Bridge, 500 Sport Bridge, 630 Sport Yacht and 720 Flybridge Motor Yacht.

Gulf Express Internationals experienced staff is available to quote your shipping costs for any of the above yachts worldwide.
