Transporting Your Yacht

How to Prepare Your Boat for Transport

Using a yacht carrier to transport your vessel to your next vacation destination is a great way to save it from wear and tear and give your crew a vacation of their own.  We’re committed to offering each customer reliable and hassle-free yacht transportation. If you’ve never utilized this service before, there are a few things you need to know in order to properly prepare your boat for transport.
Important Tips when Preparing Your Boat for Transport
  • Tip #1: When preparing your boat for transport, it’s important to secure everything. No matter how far your boat is traveling, you should secure it as if it were crossing an ocean. Secure anything that extends beyond the hull and anything loose that could cause damage during the voyage. Secure hatches with tape to avoid leaks and possible water damage and latch all cabin windows. Also remember to tape interior cabinet doors shut, securely close the cabin doors and lock all exterior doors.
  • Tip #2: Make sure the boat transportation company offers marine insurance that will adequately protect your vessel if anything should go wrong.
  • Tip #3: Inform the yacht transportation company of your vessel’s specs in advance. Make sure your measurements are accurate, because they are allocating space for your boat according to the information you give them. Keep in mind, they want to know your boat’s actual weight – not its Tonnage. If you’re not sure where to find this information, look in your boat’s stability book for Displacement.
  • Tip #4: Inspect your boat for damages and take pictures to document any that already exist. Also, if you dismantle any parts to fit size requirements or prevent them from getting damaged, be sure to take pictures of their location and set-up.
  • Tip #5: Remove all personal items from the cabin and store any breakables in a safe place. Your boat may be traveling on another boat, but it’s still going to experience the force of the ocean. Don’t forget to remove any prohibited items from your vessel’s lockers, especially if you’re going to be passing through customs.
  • Tip #6: Protect the outside of your yacht form soot, salt, etc. with shrink wrap. If your vessel is too large to cover completely, just stick to the most vulnerable areas such as teak and non-skid surfaces. Also cover all stainless steel and chrome fittings or apply an insulator wax to this exposed metal. If possible, remove and store the windshields.
  • Tip #7: Deliver your ship as light as possible. Empty all fuel and water tanks as much as possible, however, keep enough on board to get to and from the transport ship. Remove anchors from the deck, remove drain plugs from the hull and make sure there is no water in the bilge. You may also want to flush and sanitize your tanks with a chlorine bleach solution.
  • Tip #8: Power down everything, unplug your batteries and store your cables to prevent any contact. You don’t want dead batteries when your vessel is offloaded at your destination.
  • Tip #9: Bring your original registry and boat keys on the date of your trip. Also, make sure you have all necessary customs paperwork if you’re going on an international voyage.
If you’re transporting a sailing yacht: Remove sails or protect them with covers. All boats need to fit height requirements.

If your voyage is during winter months: Weatherize the engine and drain air conditioning unit.

If you’re preparing a wooden boat for transport: Use linseed oil to help prevent the wood from drying out.

There are several important steps you need to take to ensure smooth sailing for your vessel. However, once you do the preliminary work you are free to sit back, relax and rest assured knowing that your yacht is in good hands.

How we do it?

How we do it?

Come alongside our vessel, down goes the sling, up goes your yacht, and off we go… Looks easy but in fact the process is astonishingly complex and labored. Fortunately, you the owner have the easy part. Just as fortunately, we have years of experience in doing this exact procedure. We have completed  many successful loadings that the complex becomes second nature and we stay ever vigilant to unexpected events. Put simply, we plan any unusual event out of the realm of possibility.

We even jump in the water for you.

Moving boats is a complicated business. These are big, expensive, unusually fragile things. So while our crane and sling system has been proven hundreds of times, we of course leave nothing to chance. Is everything where it belongs? The weight properly distributed? Is the sling holding fast and correctly positioned? Only a visual inspection, up close and in the water, will tell for sure. This is just another way we get everything right from the start.

Almost aboard.

100 metric tons of dead weight suspended by multiple bands of strong-as-steel straps made from high tenacity webbed polyester textile fibers, the most durable fabric on the planet. Just as impressive is what you don’t see: the loadmaster shepherding your vessel aboard. With years of experience and hundreds of boats slung in his belts, his job is to get your yacht aboard safely then securely set her back in the water on arrival.

Expert crew

Our team enjoys long experience with ocean-going vessels. We are extraordinarily selective about the people we take on board. This means only the most fastidious, ship-savvy sailors work with your yacht. Each person is an expert in their own right, whether they are measuring the hull to identify the exact center of gravity, welding the steel brackets into the deck, or performing underwater inspections during the excruciatingly detailed hoisting process.

Universal cradles for safe transit to any ocean.

Universal cradles lock your vessel in for a safe, secure fit. These high precision machined devices are specifically engineered for securing vessels weighing up to 250 tons and as long as 180 feet. They safely nest every major mark including Azimut, Hatteras, Ferretti, Viking, and more. Equally important, our fastidious crew secures each cradle by hand in two teams—one to batten down and the second to check—so that the yacht is secured in the safest possible way. Once underway, these high strength steel cradles hold their charge in every sea.

Yacht Transport

The number one question that gets asked about yacht transport is how much does it cost? Well I have written this article to help everyone looking to transport their yacht or boat get an idea how much yacht transport might cost. Keep in mind that other fees can apply so its best to call Gulf Express International and get your free quote. At Gulf Express International our yacht and boat transport cost are the most competitive, comprehensive, and affordable in the boat transport business .
The first thing people will say is " I want a cheap rate to transport my boat or yacht." Well believe it or not the cheapest rate is not going to be your best bet. Yes you will be saving money on transport cost but keep in mind that cheaper cost means cheap service. If you read some of the forums online where people have used a cheap yacht transport company you will see complaints ranging from scratches in the paint to broken parts and even missing parts. Yes your insurance will cover it but do you really want to go through the hassle of waitng for repairs. Here at Gulf Express International we promise to handle your vessel with the proper care and provide you a competitive price at the same time.
Yacht transport cost can vary depending on size, weight and how far you will need your vessel transported. The first thing every company will ask you is the place of origin and the destination. Well let me correct myself, the first question almost all yacht transport companies ask is where the boat is and where is it going. We here at Gulf Express International believe in excellent customer service so our first question will be "Whom am I speaking with"? We  believe that it is very friendly and professional to get to know who we are speaking with first.
The biggest factor in the pricing of yacht transport is the height, width and weight. Over sized vessels require a escort and also the transporter has to take special routes because of weight and height restrictions. In some cases over land transport of over height vessels require them to be shipped by barge beacuse of clearance issues. A way to save money is with type of equipment used. For example, your boat could be a borderline height limit. You could call one carrier and your load would cost $10,000, yet contact another just as qualified carrier and the load is only $7,500. The reason for the lesser amount from a carrier just as qualified is because they have special low profile trailers which would put your boat under the height requirement, removing the need for costly permits and possibly fewer escorts.
This may sound like common sense, but take serious heed. If you have a 20' power boat on a new trailer, you can pretty much get away with any qualified transport company. But, if you have a 38' sail boat, be sure the transport company you hire has dealt with such a load. There are many boat transport companies who's main business are the smaller loads, or even large power boats, but the big boats require special loading and handling.
Keep in mind that when you speak to a sales represenative they will explain to you all the details of the cost to transport your yacht or boat.
Next comes where the boat is and where it is going. Although mileage doesnt play a huge factor in cost it does however have a role in the cost. Like what was posted earlier, over sized loads will require a  special route and also an escort. Some states require that you have a police excort along with the normal excort. Check with one of our representives for more information on escorts. With overwight vessels, they will require a barge to transport them because of weight restrictions. I know we have all seen those road signs that say maximum weight limit is so and so.
In conclusion overland transport can be not only a hassle saver but it also can be resonably priced. If you ever have any questions feel free to check out our website and look at our information. We provide you with a fast quote on all your yacht transport needs---info@gulfexpressintl.com
